Types of Triathlon Equipment

Since triathlons are comprised of three different events, swimming, biking, and running, there are different types of triathlon equipment.  We want to note that you could go out and spend a fortune on very expensive equipment but to purchase quality, you do not necessarily have to spend a lot of money.  Therefore, if you are just getting started with competing in triathlons, choose triathlon equipment at the lower or middle price range and as your experience grows, you can always update.

Let us say that you are getting ready to compete in your very first triathlon.  While extremely excited, you probably have questions as to the exact types of triathlon equipment needed.  Not trying to sound rude, but the possibility winning is small.  We recommend you purchase good triathlon equipment but stick to a budget.  After all, you might fall in love with this type of event or discover it is not something you want to pursue.

For the first phase, swimming, you will need a wetsuit, one that has good seals and fits properly.  Additionally, you definitely want to invest in a quality pair of goggles.  If this is your first event, you are probably going for a Sprint or Olympic format, which does not have distances as long as what would be associated with a Half-Ironman or Ironman.  Therefore, the wetsuit needs to be chosen for the water you will be swimming in but without going overboard.

The next phase of the triathlon is the biking, which also requires special triathlon equipment.  In this case, you can ride a regular road bike or invest in a good but inexpensive triathlon bike.  Other triathlon equipment for this phase would include padded shorts, a well ventilated jersey, and triathlon shoes designed to snap into the bike’s pedals.

Finally, you will move onto the final phase of the triathlon of running.  The type of triathlon equipment needed for this would be a good pair of running shoes, the type that are lightweight, comfortable, and supportive, and perhaps a pair of sunglasses.  With this triathlon equipment, all you need is to try your best and most importantly, have fun.
