Triathlon Equipment for Training
With triathlons, there are two categories for triathlon equipment. The most obvious is equipment used for the actual event. This type of equipment needs to be good quality, which can help improve your overall performance. However, there is a second category of triathlon equipment, which is used for training.
The truth is that there is not much difference between the two types of triathlon equipment but there are some. For example, the equipment you train with will not need to be state of the art. Take the wetsuit as a prime example. Many people will use a large swimming pool while training for an upcoming triathlon. Obviously, a wetsuit for this body of water is unwarranted. Therefore, all you need to train is a swimsuit. However, when actually competing, triathlon equipment would include a good quality wetsuit for better buoyancy, faster speed, and protection from the elements.
We also recommend you purchase an inexpensive pair of goggles for training. All you need for this type of triathlon equipment is something that will protect the eyes while allowing you to see beneath the water. Then when you move to the real event, your choice of goggles would change. Since many triathlons take place in the ocean, you need extra protection from the salt water.
Regarding triathlon equipment associated with the biking phase, many people, regardless of how experienced they are, will use a road bike for training and keep the more expensive triathlon bike for the competition. Of course, this is a personal preference but certainly something to consider. Additionally, while training, you would not need the same level of triathlon equipment as you would for the event. In this case, you could wear standard shorts and tee shirt to train but when it comes time for the triathlon, step it up by wearing padded pants, ventilated jersey, and so on.
